URGENT: Not working with latest update!
The latest update renders ICQ not-functional. I already opened a support ticket with ICQ, but they did absolutely nothing passed already 2 weeks since report.
Dont update! And if you havent installed yet, dont bother to do so.
This was the review I wrote for version 1.1.0:
The venerable Israeli-born ICQ is the messenger that got most of the internet old timers to learn what is IM (Instant Messaging) about. But other rivals came through offering more and interesting features (MSN, Skype, Yahoo!) or integrated with big internet portals/services (AIM, Google Talk) and the ICQ started to lose track.
With it’s purchase by Mail.ru, a new future was set and finally Mac users have a version updated to the new days. But unfortunately it’s feature set is limited. It lacks so basic stuff that it’s hard to believe it.
What’s bad about it:
— Quite limited set of ASCII characters supported (so no accents, diacritics and not even a so necessary and simple apostrophe)
— No file transfer
— Very limited amount of emoticons/emotions supported and the ones that exist have very ugly design
— Extremely complicated keyboard comands or unnecessarily out of standard for simple emoticons (Examples are flower (@}>—), Music ([:-}), Kiss (:-{} )
— No way to share your screen on video calls
— No individual chat windows (following the bad example set by Skype since it’s version 5)
— Impossible to edit your own profile
— Sound adjustments are limited to either on or off, and that’s it (although they have a plus to have kept a mastered version of it’s iconic “uh-oh”)
What’s good about it:
— Audio and video codecs provide better quality than Skype, and is more reliable too
— Support to other messaging systems, specially Vkontakte which is almost necessary if you want to contact to Russians
— Simple interface
It has much to improve to become a program on par with it’s similars, but it’s audio/video quality and support to VK makes it interesting to some people already.
